In many cases a business need occurs where the addresses need to be displayed on maps and for this reason geocoding is needed. A geocode is a spatial representation of a descriptive locational reference. A geocoder is a piece of software or a (web) service that implements a geocoding process i.e. a set of inter-related components in the form of operations, algorithms, and data sources that work together to produce a spatial representation for descriptive locational references. Geocoding is a process where mapping coordinates, typically latitude and longitude, are appended to data based on their addresses. A simple method of geocoding is address interpolation. This method makes use of data from a street geographic information system where the street network is already mapped within the geographic coordinate space. Each street segment is attributed with address ranges (e.g. house numbers from one segment to the next). Geocoding takes an address, matches it to a street and specific segment (such as a block, in towns that use the "block" convention). Geocoding then interpolates the position of the address, within the range along the segment.

Depending on the details of the addresses that are going to be geocoded there are certain geocoding levels that can be achieved (street, number, city), so the accuracy of the whole database that goes through the geocoding process depends on the completeness of the addresses and their quality after cleansing. If you wish to improve the geocoding accuracy for some records, manual intervention may be required. Manual intervention is time consuming, but will improve geocoding hit rates for those addresses that include intersections, or obvious typographical errors. The addresses can be reached on a special web resource where hits can be specified by locating an address on the map or by correcting it.
